State of wings
By Woong Hwi Jeon
Wings Over Let’s start with Wings Over. Anyone that is a Penn State student has at least experienced these wings once. Students consider Wings Over their go-to spot because of its famous boneless wings. Their delivery takes about 30 minutes, understandable considering how busy they get. I’ve had their three hottest sauces: Red Alert, Jet Fuel, and After Burner, while also enjoying their Chipotle BBQ flavor. Here comes the controversy. I don’t think Wings Over is all that great. Actually, it’s mediocre at best. First of all, the flavors—while they were definitely hot, their flavor was disappointing. Red Alert was like any generic buffalo sauce that would go on a boneless wing. Jet Fuel was hotter, and After Burner was obviously extremely hot, but again their flavors were lacking. When I eat hot wings, I expect a kick with robust flavor, but their After Burner tasted like a third degree burn. Their buffalo sauces were lacking. They seem to be sparing with the sauce. I had to scrape around the bottom to get a little drop of sauce. The only thing that I would order again is their Chipotle BBQ flavor. Canyon Wings I was blind before I had Canyon Wings. Their “boners,” or wings their sauce is superior to Wings Over’s. The first time I had Canyon Wings, marked the last time I had Wings Over. The size of their wings is decent. Their Hot Buffalo had a tangy kick. Their regular BBQ was mediocre, but still better than Wings Over. If you’re looking to save money on delivery charges, Canyon Wings is in the heart of down town, and you can eat-in or take-out. Final say Canyon Wings trumps Wings Over on all buffalo sauce fronts. While Wings Over has a decent BBQ sauce, its other flavors are incomplete. There is no beautiful combination of flavor and spice one would expect from this State College giant. - Woong Hwi Jeon |

It’s Friday night, and you have spent almost 5 hours at Indigo when you realize that you’re starving and crave something hot, cheesy, and covered in marinara sauce. Pizza is a very high commodity in State College. Mile long lines are formed outside of pizza shops, delivery cars are driving back and forth just so that college kids are able to fill their stomachs with satisfaction and carbs. As a pizza lover myself, I enjoy it cold, warm, plain, and with toppings or without. The pizza options in State college seem to be narrowed down to the two most popular parlors, Canyon Pizza or College Pizza. It seems as though the college tradition is to consume Canyon after a night on the town. Some students say you cannot graduate Penn State until you have eaten one slice of Canyon’s cheap pizza; it’s considered a moral sin if you don’t says Rahul Gosh, senior-engineer. For its convenient late night hours and its $1 slices, who can resist such a deal especially when everything seems to taste so good all of a sudden? Canyon, rated three out of five stars, has become one of those places where if you’re too intoxicated to care about what you want and not worried about buying a round of pizzas for the entire restaurant. You will see the line wrapped around the corner as if people are waiting for an Avicii concert. The service is quick and the employees are very understanding especially in your state of mind. Unfortunately, Canyon is only good when heavily under the influence, otherwise I feel like you’re eating a piece of hot cardboard. The only time I have ever gotten a hot piece of pizza from Canyon is midnight, and even then it still did not match my growling stomach. As far as College Pizza, it has been known to be way better than Canyon only for the mere fact that you can eat it drunk or sober. The toppings are fresher and have a wider range of toppings from cheese to pepperoni to Indian toppings like chicken tikka. As well as Canyon, College Pizza has convenient late nights hours, and even though the price might be a dollar more, it is well worth the wait. I feel like the dough just melts right in your mouth and the pizza seems to be always fresh no matter what time of night or day it is. So whether you are looking for cheap pizza to satisfy your taste buds or quality pizza that gives you variety toppings, and depending on your mood, Canyon and College pizza are the ways to go. By far the best place to go is College Pizza. |
Raising the bars
By Nicole Suder
Downtown State College has a bar almost every step you take while walking on College or Beaver Ave. Choosing which bar to go to is an incredibly difficult decision, especially those who just turned 21. When this new world of nightlife exploring opens up for the young undergrad, making their downtown adventures leaves them with only one question: What’s the best bar in State College?
The Saloon
Even though there’s usually never a line, the Saloon is packed every weekend with tons of people ready to have some fun on the checkered dance floor. The staff is friendly, the bartenders are great, and the Long Island Iced Teas are made with a hint of citrus. Be sure to make it for happy hour where you can get their signature Monkey Boy pitcher, any flavor you like, for only $5.
The Saloon is located on the corner of Hiester St. and E. College Ave. at 101 Hiester St. Visit their website at www.dantesinc.com/locations/the-saloon.
Cafe 210 West
This is a favorite spot for students during the summer, fall, and spring because it’s a great place to eat and drink outside. When My Hero Zero, a well-known local cover band, takes the stage on Friday nights the dance floor is absolutely packed. Their happy hour is amazing because everything is super cheap, including doubles. If you’re not really looking to dance there’s also plenty of tables where you can sit and relax.
Café 210 West, or also known to many as just “café”, is hard to miss with its large outdoor setup. The name of the bar comes from the address, which is 210 W College Ave. Visit their website at www.cafe210.com.
The Phyrst
This is the place to be on your twenty first birthday! It’s dark, loud, and a little grimy, but that’s what makes it so much fun! The Phyrst Girls are always making sure the customers are being taken care of and that the bar stays as clean as possible. They have live music every night and people are always dancing.
The Phyrst is located at 111 East Beaver Ave. and easy to spot on weekends from its long line. Visit their website at www.phyrst.com.
Pickles
Even though there’s no dancing or live band in this bar, it’s still one of my favorites because there are plenty of people there looking to have a good time. I can tell this is definitely a State College favorite since the line is always long throughout the weekend. They have awesome happy hour specials, with their most popular being their $3 Iced Teas. This place gets packed quickly so make sure you get there early to get a seat at the bar.
Pickles is located near the corner of College Ave. and Allen St. at 106 South Allen St. Their website can be found through the Hotel State College Company at http://www.hotelstatecollege.com/#!billpicklestaproom/c1hc3.
Chrome
This is a newer bar in State College that is up-and-coming. Chrome doubles as a hookah lounge and always has good drink and hookah specials. There are plenty of places to sit down and relax, but there’s also a good amount of room to dance if you’re in the mood for that. Be sure to try the pink starburst shot and the Chromie. Both of these are very cheap and will get your night started out right.
Chrome is located near the end of downtown at 222 W Beaver Ave. near Burrowes St. Visit their website at www.chrome-lounge.com.

In the a.m.
By Taylor Scheese
After a great night out at the bars, frat parties or whatever it may be, most people are craving some greasy food. If you’re anything like myself, you’ve already planned out where you’re going to go before you’ve even left to go out. With all this intense thought going into choosing the right food, here’s the scoop on State College’s best late night eats. Canyon Pizza Canyon Pizza is a college student’s dream for late night food. With pizza being a dollar per slice, it’s no wonder the line always wraps the block. If you’re not in a rush and don’t mind waiting for a slice of mediocre at best pizza (and let’s be honest, when you’re drunk, who cares), canyon is the place for you. Gumby’s Gumby’s Pokey Stix. Need I say more? Pokey Stix are pretty much glorified cheesey bread sticks with any dipping sauce you desire. I’m a ranch or marinara person. The best part about Pokey Stix —they’re cheap and can be delivered. Taco Bell Taco Bell can be a little pricey when you’re on a college budget, however, who can pass up Doritos Locos Tacos? The next morning, your stomach might not think it was the greatest idea, but at the time, it’s heaven. |
R U Hungry R U Hungry easily has the most unhealthy, greasy food, but when you’re drunk, it hits the spot. Again, it can be pricey, but anything you can think of thrown in a sandwich might be one of the greatest inventions. My personal favorite is the Fat Bitch (steak, American cheese, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, mayo, and ketchup). D.P. Dough If you’re willing to wait a few minutes for food, D.P. Dough is definitely worth it. They’re known for their large-enough-for-two calzones. All that dough is great when you’ve had one too many beers. They’re made fresh and if you don’t see one you like, you can always create your own. My personal favorite is the Buffer Zone. McDonald’s McDonald’s is always a zoo inside. The atmosphere is definitely an experience in and of itself. It’s a great, quick place for a cheeseburger or some chicken nuggets. McDonald’s is usually a last resort drunk food decision. Insomnia Personally, I’m not a big sweets fan to begin with, but I always see a line at Insomnia during the late hours. If you’re craving a huge cookie or even some ice cream, Insomnia’s the place for you. Canyon Wings Canyon Wings is definitely the best-drunk wings option. Although Wings Over is certainly a favorite, I get too impatient when I’m drunk. At Canyon, you can stop in and have some quick and saucy wings. They’re not too bad either — good enough when you’ve had one too many at the bars. |
